NATIONAL COUNSELOR EXAMINATION (NCE) INFORMATION

The North Dakota Board of Examiners has selected the National Counselor Examination (NCE) as the counselor licensing examination for LPC. The NCE was constructed and developed by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and assesses knowledge in the following eight areas:
  1. Human Growth and Development
  2. Social and cultural Foundations
  3. The Counseling Relationship (including counseling theories)
  4. Group Dynamics, Processes and Counseling
  5. Lifestyle and Career Development
  6. Appraisal of Individuals
  7. Research and Evaluation, and
  8. Professional Orientation.
The NCE is comprised of 200 multiple choice questions. The items are evenly divided into eight content areas, 25 items per category. Only 160 of the 200 items are scored; the other 40 items are experimental items being evaluated for future use. The score for passing the NCE is dependent on the form of the test being administered. The passing score of recent forms used in ND ranged from 95 to 105. The exam is scheduled for a four-hour period.

A Preparation Guide for the NCE is available from NBCC. Please visit www.nbcc.org for further information.
